Muzkanda Kids

Muzkanda Kids is the uniquely South African early childhood music education programme!

The Muzkanda Kids programme is offered across preschool, Grade R, and Grades 1-3. The course has been created specifically for the modern South African musical environment.

Uniquely designed content

The Muzkanda Kids music appreciation classes have been designed independently, and give your child extra exposure to musical group activities. In music education, exposure to musical activity is everything, and the Muzkanda Kids programme focuses on further developing fundamental aural skills that will serve your child for life. The course also develops those extremely important coordination skills that are required to participate in music.

Lessons are presented in English, but ours songs are also translated into Afrikaans and isiXhosa. The programme is centred around narrative themes, which are enhanced by visual aids, props and games. We also use a unique music educational system where the colours of the rainbow are related to other non-musical concepts, such as numbers and coordinated movements. All of these serve to convey important aural skills to the children.

The course is designed so that children can join in classes at any age, or during any term of the programme, and easily ‘catch up’ with the rest of the class. This is possible because the programme is based on exposure to music through repetition of core conceptual content via musical games and activities.

Muzkanda Kids: Built with musical development in mind

The music-educational goals of the Muzkanda Kids programme are:

  • exposing young children to musical activities before instrumental music lessons are possible;
  • encouraging social interaction between children through shared musical activities and physical games;
  • there is a strong emphasis on the development of rhythmic, metrical, and interval awareness;
  • encouragement of fine- and gross-pitch discrimination abilities;
  • and structured improvisational musical activities to develop early musical creativity.

Classes are fun and interactive, featuring musical games, group singing, and exposure to simple musical instruments. Each class is presided over by a teacher, who applies the Muzkanda Kids class plan.

Fun stories

The Muzkanda Kids programme proceeds by use of a narrative-based curriculum. Stories feature characters like a frog with an odd love for tennis, a shark who visits the dentist, golf-playing giraffes, tigers that go to the beach, parrots who only count to four, a spider that is afraid of heights and a starfish that doesn’t do much at all. All songs are presented in English, but the course also facilitates early learning of isiXhosa and Afrikaans vocabulary through translation of familiar songs.
